Intellectual Property Office Reports 2017 Statistics on IP Filings

The Philippine Intellectual Property Office released the IP Statistics relating to trademarks, patents, utility model, industrial design and copyright filings for the year 2017.

Trademarks
The total trademark applications filed in 2017 is 32,524 compared to 27,120 in 2016 and 27,112 in 2015. Out of the 32,524 trademark applications, 18,489 were filed by Philippine resident applicants. A total of 7,236 trademark applications filed by non-resident applicants were filed directly with the IPO and 6,817 trademark applications were filed through the Madrid system. Moreover, a total of 23,570 trademark applications were registered in 2017.

Patents
For the year 2017, patent applications totaled 3,084 compared to 3,098 in 2016. Out of the total 3, 084 patent applications filed in 2017, 2,800 patent applications were filed by non-resident applicants while only 284 patent application were filed by applicants from the Philippines. Majority of the patent applications filed non-resident applicants were filed through the PCT Route. PCT Route patent applications totaled 2,552 in 2017 as compared to 2,601 filings in 2016. Only 248 patent applications were filed directly to the IPO by non-Philippine residents. A total of 284 patent applications were filed by Philippine residents in 2017. There were 1,540 patent applications that were granted in 2017.

Utility Model

Utility Model applications filed in 2017 totaled to 1,359. of the Bulk of utility model applications were filed by Philippine resident applicants and totaled to 1,299. Only 60 utility model applications were filed by non-resident applicants. On the other hand, a total of 492 utility model applications were registered in 2017, 466 of which are owned by Philippine residents and only 26 utility model registrations are owned by non-Philippine residents.

Industrial Design

Industrial Design applications totaled to 1,391 for 2017 compared to 1, 488 for the year 2016. Out of the total, 726 were filed by applicants from the Philippines while 665 industrial design applications were filed by non-resident applicants. On the other hand, a total of 1,620 industrial design applications were registered in 2017, 982 of which are registered under the name of Philippine residents and 638 industrial design registrations are registered under the name of foreign individuals or corporations.

The number of copyright filings and registrations have been relatively constant throughout the years. For 2017, a total of 983 copyright filings have been filed.
